The Word That Freezes Christians Like A Deer In The Headlights

I hate Christians. They are all hypocrites.

How often have you heard this? How do you respond?

If you’re like most of us, you retaliate with lies. Popular responses include: “Not all of us” or perhaps, “There are a few bad apples out there that make the rest of us look bad.”

Sorry. Wrong answer.

The truth is ALL Christians are hypocrites. We say one thing and we do the other. Every day, all of the time. It’s because while we’re here on earth, we’ll always be short of Heaven.

The correct response to this statement is “So what?”

“What do you mean, ‘So what?’ I just told you that all Christians are hypocrites. Aren’t you going to put up your dukes and defend your faith?”

“No. Because it’s not about me. It’s not about my Christian friends. You’re right. We are messed up. We’re hypocrites.”

“It’s about Jesus.”

It is all about Jesus. But, the worst mistake we can make is thinking we can’t share our faith until we’re perfect like Jesus.

We wait until we take a few more Bible studies. Until we can rid ourselves of more of our shortcomings, our unattractive qualities, our addictions and until we’re more skilled at defending our faith. Until then…we’ll just keep to ourselves. We certainly don’t want anyone to accuse us of being a hypocrite.

Here’s the problem with that strategy. Waiting until your perfect is a perfect waste of time.

Don’t get me wrong. We should be striving to be more like Jesus every day. We should be a work in process. It’s just…while we’re processing…we need to be working.

Because our friends, our family, our acquaintances and even those we don’t know well, who we should love anyway…they are dying all around us. They are starving for Truth in their lives. These are the very same people God put in the middle of our lives, purposely so that we would stand up and speak up about Him.

It’s not about us being Righteous Richard or Sally Sanctimonious.

It’s about us being desperate for a Savior, and desperate to let everyone know who He is.

Being a hypocrite? It’s a pretty small price to pay, don’t you think?
