A letter to my sons on why they should read “The Hobbit” by Ron Citlau

Jack, Sawyer, Eli, and Crosby:

You will hear as you grow up many explanations about the world and what it means to be a man.  Most of what you hear, unfortunately, will be wrong.   People will tell you to just sit still, don’t fight, be nice, be calm, be gentle, be passive and just be like everyone else.  No, your life is meant to be much more than a list of things not to do.

This is why good stories are so important for growing boys.  They help tell you what it means to be men and what your lives should be about.  There is one story I want you to read over and over again: The Hobbit , by J.R.R. Tolkien.  It is a good story.  It will help you become good men.

It will help you become good men because it teaches that it is worthwhile to live into a good story.  The main character in the story is Bilbo Baggins…
